RED WIRED

CHERYL NANCARROW

// Cheryl is based in Australia and had the opportunity to visit a contemporary art exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane. When she saw it she realised she wanted to create her own photo art based on it. She calls this series “Red Wired”.

Cheryl is an enthusiastic amateur photographer who enjoys exploring various genres of photography. Over the past 10 years, she has created numerous ICM (in-camera movement) images. She also combines multiple exposures in-camera, experimenting with different blend modes and shutter speeds. By blending images in post-processing, she produces unique, artistic photographs that showcase the results of these techniques

“Art is for everyone – art opens your mind, soul & emotions.”

Cheryl Nancarrow

What draws you to the arts?

As a retired senior I have the time to attend regular plays performed by Brisbane Theatre Company and regularly visit galleries & art exhibitions with friends. I’m always inspired & enthused by having these experiences. I have ‘like minded’ friends to share this with, making for an enjoyable satisfied life.”

What do you like best about this project?

“As I worked on the images at home in post processing, it took a while for me to think about bringing this folio together in a cohesive collection. I had an image of some black wire displayed on a wall. As soon as I blended this wire image over the red abstract, it all fell into place for me. This is “Red Wired”. I realise abstract art is not enjoyed or understood by a lot of others – especially when sharing photography on social media. But my abstract photography has given me much joy and pleasure, and I’m happy to just please myself with my images.”

Cheryl titled this series “Red Wired”. While visiting the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane with friends, she saw an art installation by Judy Watson on the floor and immediately knew she wanted to photograph it and create abstract images. The striking red lip-shaped design was perfect for contrasting multiple exposures in-camera.

Sometimes she would move the camera, other times she would take four or five pictures, experimenting with different blend modes in-camera. Cheryl usually checks the camera in preview mode while shooting, to adjust movement or composition, and she quickly realised that this was going to be an exciting, original series.

The “Red Wired” series represents Cheryl’s unique approach to photography, blending her love for abstract art with her technical skills. Her ability to find inspiration in art experiences, like a visit to a museum, and transform them into compelling visual narratives speaks to her creative vision. Despite the challenges and varying perceptions of abstract art, Cheryl remains true to her artistic passion, finding joy and satisfaction in her work. This series not only showcases her talent but also underscores the importance of pursuing one’s creative instincts for their own sake. Through “Red Wired,” Cheryl invites viewers to see the world through her lens, celebrating the beauty and complexity of abstract forms.

Really interesting to see how you have developed these from the original artwork.

yes, isn’t it fascinating how she created her own art from another artwork
