HANS VERDUIN
// Hans, born and living in the Netherlands, embarked on a captivating journey to capture the essence of renowned Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck’s exhibition at Kunsthal KADE in Amersfoort earlier this year. With an innate passion for transforming ordinary objects into extraordinary art, Hans´ lens becomes an instrument of storytelling, translating the profound emotions embedded in these sculptural installations into a series of stunning black and white photographs.
Hans describes himself not as a creator but as an observer, a keen interpreter of the world around him. His artistic vision lies in his ability to transcend the surface and reveal the deeper narratives that lie beneath.
An active member of Fotoclub Nunspeet and Fotografen Collectief Zutphen, with a dash of creativity, he seamlessly blends traditional techniques with modern editing tools, adding a unique flair to his photographs. Delving into the depths of Op de Beeck’s artistic universe
Known for his monochromatic grey sculptures, large-scale installations, thought-provoking drawings and mesmerising videos, Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck invites viewers into a realm of introspection and contemplation. His work explores themes of human perception, the beauty of the ordinary and the enigmatic nature of existence.
The exhibition at Kunsthal KADE earlier this year featured a selection of works from the CollectieCentrum Nederland (CC NL) in Amersfoort, a vast repository of cultural treasures that houses the collections of the Dutch Open Air Museum, Paleis Het Loo, the Rijksmuseum and the National Agency for Cultural Heritage. Op de Beeck’s enigmatic creations, juxtaposed with the CC NL’s diverse collection, weave a tapestry of narratives that delve into the human experience.
The exhibition was a harmonious blend of the artist´s monochromatic grey works and the vibrant diversity of the national collections. The artist has carefully selected 14 of his sculptures and created themes to guide the selection of the accompanying depot pieces. The themes explore universal concepts such as childhood innocence, travel, the sea, celebration, memento mori and spaces of wonder. He created a dialogue between the past and the present. The exhibition transcends the boundaries of time and genre, creating a tapestry of stories that resonate with the human experience.
Hans’s photographic journey through Op de Beeck’s exhibition at Kunsthal KADE is a testament to the harmonious convergence of artistic minds. The capture of the greyscale sculptures in black-and-white photographs is an entirely logical choice and creates a compelling visual dialogue, enhancing the emotional resonance of each piece.
Hans’s masterful use of contrast and chiaroscuro effects presents the exhibition in a new light. The absence of colour forces the viewer to focus on the essence of each piece, and the expertly crafted tonal range gives the photographs a sense of depth and dimension, drawing the viewer into the heart of each installation.
Through his lens, Hans has captured the essence of Op de Beeck’s creations, inviting viewers to enter a world of introspection, contemplation and profound beauty.
