THE LIGHT OF A FLEETING TIME

LAURA MALATERRA

//Introducing Laura Malaterra, a distinguished Fine Art photographer from Genoa, Italy, whose multifaceted background in architecture and theater infuses her photographic journey with a unique perspective. In her project “The Lights of a Fleeting Time,” Laura uses Caravaggio-like light and shadow to reveal photography’s transformative essence.

A graduate in architecture, Laura’s passion for the arts led her to pursue a theatrical career as both an actress and director, profoundly influencing her approach to photography. With years of dedicated study and boundless enthusiasm, Laura’s curiosity knows no bounds as she delves into the intricacies of reality, and she is particularly drawn to the enchanting embrace of natural light.

Beyond her photographic endeavors, Laura’s creative enterprises extend to playwriting for theater, authoring six books, and sharing her insights on photography through her blog “L’Auraphotographica” and contributions to Artwort, an independent art blog.

“That invisible Aura that, diaphanously transpiring, makes an image vibrant, like a dreamy enchantment.”

What draws you to the arts?

I have a degree in Architecture and I have worked a lot in theater in a professional company as a director and actress. These professional interests of mine have greatly influenced, and still influence, my approach to photography.

What do you like best about this photographic project?

“The use of light, soft and warm tones that highlight particulars and details, lights and nuances that I have defined as “Caravaggesque”. I love still life photography and “The light of a fleeting time” represent my way of feeling and experiencing photography: the light, the flowers and the objects in my home. Intense journeys between the rooms chasing the light by moving flowers, leaves and branches that change colours and always fascinate me. In their withering I seem to read the stories of their short lives so I immortalize them when they are already withered. They contain, within petals and leaves, those colours and shapes that time has consumed and transformed. Transfiguring the dying vitality into new flowers, ancient and wise. It is a life break that I love to photograph.”

Laura´s series is photographed in the intimate corners of her home, where she finds a world where light, flowers, and everyday objects intertwine in a dance of fleeting beauty.

Laura’s exploration of brightness and darkness, contrasts and harmonies, is seamlessly woven into her pictures, reflecting her quest to capture scenes imbued with the essence of daily life and death. Her keen eye discerns the beauty hidden within items found at home, transforming ordinary objects into poetic scenographies that transcend their surface appearance.

Laura´s images invite viewers into a world where delectable fruits and dying flowers are transfigured into dreamlike visions, each frame pulsating with the vibrant energy of life’s fleeting moments. Through her lens, Laura Malaterra invites us to see the world anew, and to ponder the profound beauty woven into the fabric of everyday existence.
