GRACE IN MOTION

JENNIE BLYTHE

// Celebrating International Dance Day 2024, we are thrilled to showcase Jennie´s ballet portraiture. As a passionate photographer based in London, Jennie experiments across photographic genres. She brings her unique vision to the world of ballet through her captivating dancer portraits.

For Jennie, her professional world of e-commerce takes a backseat when she picks up her camera. “The constant process of learning and creating, then applying it to new artistic endeavors, truly fuels my passion,” she explains. While her photographic journey began with a DSLR camera in 2002, it wasn’t until 2018 that Jennie truly embraced photography with a newfound zeal. Travel remains her artistic muse, but her lens now explores a diverse range of genres, capturing the essence of street life and the beauty of portraiture. Through it all, Jennie maintains a deep respect for her subjects and surroundings, ensuring her photographs are sensitive reflections of what she encounters.

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”

What draws you to the arts?

Inspiration for photography can come from anywhere, from any field of creativity or culture. When we open our eyes through the lens we can also open them to everything, every detail of life. Dance photography is perfect for this, as so many of the moves are rooted in precision and perfection.

What do you like best about your dancer portraits?

What I like the best behind the portraits of dancers and other physical performers is just how much skill and commitment goes into the creation of seeming simplicity and grace. Of course as the photographer my lens captures the freeze-frame moment but my mind remembers the interactions with the performers, the elicitation of shots through humour and through trying new things.
