ANIMATING THE INANIMATE

VINCENZO VENERUSO

//Vincenzo is based in Napoli, Italy. He began his photographic journey with an immersion in analogue techniques, where the thrill of developing black and white images in the dimly lit confines of a darkroom ignited a deep passion. With the advent of digital photography, his focus shifted towards the captivating realm of still life.

And so, exclusively employing lighting techniques – wielding torches, flashes, and illuminators as his tools – Vincenzo embarked on a transformative journey.

“… I put down the brush, and I drew with a beam of light, shapes and colours also hidden by an immeasurable darkness …”

Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio

What draws you to the arts?

“Classical studies led me to love art in general, especially painting, especially loving “Caravaggio” and other painters of the same Renaissance period. ”

What do you like best about this photographic project?

“Trying to give a life, a soul to inanimate subjects. Looking at a still life, painting or photo, must make us understand that living things do not last, that everything is ephemeral. Painting with light, extracting shapes, images, colours from the dark is the most gratifying experience one can try. Finally, admiring a shot made with this technique arouses deep feelings of pleasure in me that I hope to be able to convey to the public.”

Vinzenzo´s still-life narrative unveils a profound idea, a fervent passion for resurrecting life within lifeless objects. With unwavering dedication and a commitment to ceaseless experimentation, the artist endeavours to unveil the concealed vitality dwelling within each of his subjects. The images presented here are the result of countless hours spent in the studio, the culmination of an extensive series of photographs, carefully curated to showcase the most captivating and compelling moments captured.

Quoting Caravaggio´s words (above), Vinzenzo says “This profound statement resonates deeply with my photography mission. Through my lens, I seek to extract the very essence of the subjects, breathing life and soul into them through the medium of light.”

These beautiful still-life photographs are so painterly and beautifully lit, they remind us of the canvases of the old Renaissance masters.
