AMY NEWTON-McCONNEL
//Art photographer Amy Newton McConnel brings a unique perspective to the world of photography, using her camera as a tool to explore the abstract beauty hidden within everyday moments. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, she specializes in Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography, a technique that transforms ordinary scenes into fluid, painterly compositions. By deliberately moving the camera during exposure, she captures dynamic and abstract visual narratives that challenge perception and ignite the imagination.
Amy’s work is driven by a desire to encapsulate the essence of a singular moment in time. Her images blend colours and shapes in a way that transports viewers into an alternate visual realm—one where movement and emotion intertwine. Through her abstract photography, she aims to inspire audiences to see the world through a new lens, to recognize beauty in the fleeting and ephemeral. In a fast-paced world where moments are often overlooked, Amy’s art invites contemplation and appreciation for the intricate dance of light, colour, and motion.
“Imagine all the people sharing all the world.”

What draws you to the arts?
I’m drawn to the arts because they give me a way to express myself and explore new ideas. The arts capture my attention because they stir emotions, encourage reflection, and help create connections between people and places. Through art, I can re-imagine my surroundings, adding my personal experiences and emotional ties to what I see.
What do you like best about this project?
This project holds a special place for me, as it marks my first visit to Santa Fe. My time in Santa Fe left a deep impression on me, stirring emotions and fostering a connection with the local culture—a blend of ancient traditions and modern creativity. I found inspiration in Santa Fe’s unique cultural tapestry, which is deeply intertwined with history, art, and spirituality.
Her latest series, which focuses on the Santa Fe Railyard, exemplifies her ability to transform physical spaces into abstract expressions of energy and culture. The Santa Fe Railyard, a vibrant hub of art, commerce, and history, provided the perfect backdrop for her exploration of colour and movement. Using a combination of ICM and multiple exposure techniques, she captured the essence of this historic yet modern space, highlighting its contrasts and connections.
Her images from this series reflect not only the physical characteristics of the Railyard but also the emotions and energy she experienced during her time there. Through her work, she bridges the past and present, bringing forth a visual interpretation of a location that continues to evolve.
A quote displayed on a plaque at the Santa Fe Railyard resonates deeply with her artistic philosophy: “Imagine all the people sharing all the world”—words from John Lennon that encapsulate the spirit of unity and shared experience that Amy seeks to convey through her work. Through her abstract photography, she offers viewers a glimpse into her own visual interpretation of the world, encouraging them to pause, reflect, and embrace the beauty of the impermanent.
