// Karin, a Vienna-based photographer, has lived and travelled around the world and so has a global perspective. She’s passionate about capturing the essence of diverse cultural experiences. Her journey from occasional travel photographer to dedicated creator has been fueled by her love for the arts, stories, and discovery. Today we present her series about a modern oasis of art, the Abu Dhabi Louvre.
As a graduate of the Prager Photo School for Applied and Artistic Photography in Linz (Austria) and an active member of the Pictorial-List community and the founder and creative director of Spectaculum Magazine, Karin’s work reflects her evolving style and interests. Her focus has shifted from primarily capturing solitary landscapes to often incorporating human elements, with a particular interest in documentary storytelling as well as photography of the arts.
Her work has been shown in group exhibitions internationally and in Austria.
What draws you to the arts?
“Art is a constant source of inspiration, both for my wellbeing and for my photography. It is a passion that started in early childhood, with visits to youth theatre performances, which sparked life-long passion for theatre, concerts and arts of all kinds as a spectator. I would have liked to draw and paint, but I do not have the skills. It is with my camera that I get to capture the subjects and stories that catch my eye.”
What impressed you most about the Abu Dhabi Louvre?
“I totally loved the various light situations. The building is flooded by light through big glass windows, but the most special part is the dappled light that is created by the thatched roof structure in its courtyard. It was the highlight for me, although of course the art is very beautiful too.
Jean Nouvel’s Masterpiece: Exploring the “other” Louvre through Photography
The Abu Dhabi Louvre is a renowned art museum located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is a unique collaboration between the French government and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The museum houses a vast collection of artworks from around the world, spanning centuries and cultures. Visitors can explore galleries featuring masterpieces from renowned artists, as well as exhibits that delve into the history and cultural significance of the region. The Abu Dhabi Louvre is a cultural landmark that showcases the rich heritage of the Middle East and the universal language of art.
“We were travelling to Dubai to see the Expo 2022, and we made it a point to also visit Abu Dhabi. While I found Dubai completely overwhelming, I enjoyed the more tranquil atmosphere of Abu Dhabi – although it is also very posh and has lots of modern architecture. Wherever I go, I try to visit some museums, and the Abu Dhabi Louvre was high on my list. I was most impressed by the elegant modernity of the building itself. I have of course been to the Paris Louvre, which is much grander in scale and has such a long history, but I found it fascinating that it has this beautifuil modern counterpart in the Emirates.”
The Abu Dhabi Louvre’s architecture is as striking as its collection. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the museum is a masterpiece of modern design inspired by traditional Arabian architecture. The most iconic feature is the Great Dome, a vast, perforated dome that covers the central courtyard. Its intricate geometric pattern casts dappled light on the shady ground and walls, creating a play of light and shadow throughout the day.
The museum’s galleries are arranged around the central courtyard, and their design reflects the interplay between traditional and contemporary elements. The use of local materials like limestone and wood complements the modern architectural forms, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.
Karin decided to produce this photo series in black and white to eliminate the distractions of colour, focusing instead on the unique light situations and the interplay of reflections and textures that abound in the Abu Dhabi Louvre. The monochromatic palette enhances the dramatic effect of the shadows cast by the Great Dome, creating a timeless and evocative atmosphere. This choice further emphasizes the museum’s architectural grandeur and the enduring beauty of the artworks within.
