SVEN DOORNKAAT
// Sven is a professional photographer originally from Tulln in Austria, now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the USA. Initially a photojournalist in Europe, he later became a portrait photographer for celebrities in Los Angeles, and at the same time discovered light painting, which has fascinated him ever since. We share images from his artistic night landscape series called “Nocturnal Creations”.

What draws you to the arts?
“My new hometown Santa Fe is one of the biggest art cities in the US so I am fortunate to see a lot of different art – from paintings to sculptures and this feels very inspiring. Especially in today’s world where everything is consumed very quickly, art often has the ability to slow you down and take it all in.”
What do you like best about the photo art project you have shared with us?
“The scenery often seems unreal, because the viewer can’t figure out where the light is coming from. I also like the contrast of the eerie moon mixed with the warmth of the handheld light.”
Sven took all the images in this series during a full moon with some light painting added to the scene. “I am using a lot of DIY modifiers to shape and soften the light,” he explains. “Some of these images contain up to 50 single exposures that are then put together in post-processing.”
We love the glowing colours that pop out of the night and highlight particular objects or parts of that desert landscape.
