OVIUL MARUF
// Oviul Maruf is a Bangladeshi photographer based in Sylhet. He has developed a particular interest in nature, long-exposure photography and abstract visual storytelling. His series Botanical Silence turns his attention to flowers and the small details of the natural world, exploring their forms, textures and colours through quiet, contemplative images.
Oviul currently balances his photography with his studies at Jalalabad Cantonment Public School and College in Sylhet. He hopes to continue studying photography and eventually pursue a professional career in media.
Despite being at such an early stage of his photographic journey, Maruf has already received some recognition.
His work has appeared in The Eye of Photography, Collateral, Earth.Org and Byron Magazine, and his photographic practice has been profiled by WallMag. In 2026, he was named champion of the Environmental Photography Exhibition at the Sylhet Environment Summit.

What draws you to the arts?
I enjoy visiting museums, looking at paintings, illustrations, sculptures, and other forms of visual art, because they often make me slow down and notice emotions, details, and perspectives that I might otherwise overlook. I also enjoy creating art myself, and I find the process of turning an idea or feeling into something visual very meaningful. For me, art is a way of connecting with emotions and seeing ordinary things from a different perspective. It often inspires me to be more observant, curious, and open-minded in everyday life.
What do you like best about this project?
This one is about the beauty of nature and flowers. In general for me, it’s all about capturing a good photograph through the process. Before I take a shot I always visualize the final scene in my mind. That mental image drives me to keep experimenting with the same locations. It’s like each attempt reveals something new and magical.
In Botanical Silence, flowers are not photographed merely for their obvious decorative beauty. Instead, Oviul isolates shapes, textures, colours and the fall of light, looking for the subtle presence of natural forms that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
There is an intentional slowness to the process. Oviul describes observing his subjects closely and patiently, allowing the forms of petals and leaves to determine the composition rather than imposing an elaborate concept upon them. Small details become the subject: the curve of a petal, the texture of a leaf, a shift in colour or the way light touches a flower. Through this concentration on seemingly simple elements, the photographs move away from straightforward botanical documentation and towards something more contemplative.
For Oviul, Botanical Silence is about the beauty of nature and flowers, but also about paying attention. He speaks of a “silent language of nature”, something that becomes perceptible when we stop long enough to notice it.
Fragility and stillness are therefore as important to the series as colour and form. The images ask for a similar kind of attention from the viewer: to pause rather than simply glance.
His quiet botanical work witnesses a curiosity about what photography can reveal when ordinary vision is not quite enough. A flower can become an arrangement of light, colour and fragile forms; darkness can be transformed by a long exposure into something the eye itself could never see.
Botanical Silence shows one of the most restrained directions in Oviul´s developing practice: an invitation to look more closely at something familiar and discover how much can be contained in the simple act of paying attention.
