What draws you to the arts?
I have loved art for as long as I can remember. Art is my life and in art I meet people. I am in love with cinema in particular, but I would say all the performing arts are a reference point for my start in photography. Poetry, music all are inspiration, all are an occasion for a birth of ideas. However, in the process of creativity I meet my deepest self. Essentially it is the time to be free and honest.
What do you like best about this project?
I would say that this specific work has a particular impact on me as I perceive it as a self-fulfilling prophecy. I am essentially negotiating the issue of repositioning a human being in life. That is, it is something like a “second chance”. You monologue like a prayer and you hear yourself saying : “you can be better, you can”. So while it seemingly has a dark performance I would venture to say it is hopeful.
Ypatia’s latest photographic series, I Change, I Am Born Again, emerges as a powerful collection that captures the cyclical nature of identity—the process of constant evolution, shedding old selves, and embracing new beginnings. At the heart of the series is the theme of personal reinvention, a concept that speaks to both the resilience and strength of the human spirit, particularly the journey of women as they redefine themselves time and again.
Ypatia describes this series as a process of shedding parts of oneself in order to allow for renewal and a renewed perspective. “I am born again means to change,” she explains. “To shed parts of the self and expose yourself to the light with a renewed perspective.” Through her images, Ypatia reveals the interplay between light and darkness, growth and struggle, and creates a space for the viewer to reflect on their own journey of change and transformation.
In some of her photographs, Ypatia includes a childhood portrait of herself, symbolizing how memory and past experiences shape the person we become. These layers of past and present invite the viewer to consider their own evolving sense of self, highlighting how our identities are continuously informed by both our personal histories and our experiences of the world around us.
In this context photography also serves as a deeply therapeutic tool—one that enables the artist to reflect on and process her personal journey. Each image becomes a step in her own journey of self-discovery, a visual expression of the challenges, triumphs, and transitions she has faced. By capturing moments of change and rebirth, Ypatia transforms her own experiences into a visual language that resonates on both an individual and collective level.
This therapeutic aspect of photography extends beyond the artist, as the images themselves invite the viewer to engage in their own process of reflection. Photography, in this sense, becomes a transformative tool—a way to process emotions, explore identity, and grapple with the complexities of the human experience.
Ypatia’s work encourages us to confront our own memories and experiences, to shed the parts of ourselves that no longer serve us, and to embrace the possibility of growth and renewal.
The technical aspect of I Change, I Am Born Again is equally integral to its themes. Ypatia combines traditional photographic techniques with digital manipulation, allowing her to transform and reimagine her images. This blending of the real and the virtual mirrors the fluidity of identity itself—where reality and illusion merge, creating new layers of meaning and possibility.
Though the images in the series can appear somber, Ypatia views the work as a hopeful exploration of resilience. “You monologue like a prayer, and you hear yourself saying: ‘You can be better, you can,’” she reflects. There is an underlying message of hope and empowerment, suggesting that even through moments of darkness, there is always the potential for transformation and renewal.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, Ypatia’s work resonates deeply with the call to accelerate progress toward women’s empowerment, as it aligns with the artist´s exploration of personal rebirth and growth. To accelerate change requires recognizing and celebrating the strength, resilience, and agency of women—both as individuals and as a collective force for transformation.
Through her art, Ypatia invites us to embrace the idea of continuous transformation—not just as individuals, but as a society. Her work reminds us that the path toward empowerment is not always linear but a constant process of redefining, shedding, and growing.
