ICE WORKS

THE STILLNESS OF TIME

DANIEL P. OLSEN

// Daniel is a creative multi-talent: photographer, composer, and singer-songwriter. Based in the Hudson Valley in New York, he has been capturing images of nature since he first held a camera. We present his intricate black and white winter photography series “ice works (the stillness of time)”.

Born and raised in New York City, Dan’s passion for art emerged early in his youth. Exposed to the city’s vibrant artistic landscape, from street art to diverse genres of music, he developed a keen appreciation for creative expression. While he experimented with various forms of art throughout his youth, it was later in life that he cultivated a dedicated interest in music and photography. The creative process pushes Dan to his limits, offering a mix of excitement, reward, and occasional nerves. As an artist, he consistently seeks to challenge himself and share his work with the world. In photography, he loves capturing the beauty of nature in all forms.

“Even the things that seem still are still changing.”

Ben Folds

What draws you to the arts?

Art is what keeps things in motion, mentally, physically and spiritually. When I am focused on a project be it photography, or music is when I feel most connected to a calming and powerful energy that is the driving force for my very being. I get the same feeling and drive when inspired by the wonderful creations of other artists as well. The continuity between myself and other artist is vital to keeping the flow.

What do you like best about your ice photo series?

I enjoy venturing out into the unknown and never knowing what I will find along the way. For me nature will always open my mind to wonder what I will find and I love to capture those moments through my lens.

During cold winter days, Dan ventured into the forest to explore the ever-changing environment. For this series, he captured the diverse stages of water freezing within the mountainous forest, focusing on brooks and streams. Fascinated by the unique shapes and textures that emerged as temperatures fluctuated, Dan documented these ephemeral formations. Each image captures a fleeting moment, unique and unrepeatable. He chose black and white for this series to emphasize the visual details and inherent beauty of each frozen scene.

May these icy images ignite a sense of wonder within you. Nature, the grandest of all artists, constantly creates breathtaking scenes. Photography, on the other hand, with its unique possibilities, unveils these fleeting moments of beauty, often surpassing the limitations of human vision.
